The August bank holiday weekend is approaching and we've got a lot going on in the city for everyone to enjoy! Here are some of this weekend's highlights!
Gloucester Goes Retro

Gloucester Goes Retro is returning for its 10th anniversary on Saturday 23rd August 2025!
One of the highlights of the city’s vibrant festival calendar, Gloucester Goes Retro features over 500 classic vehicles filling the historic Gate Streets and Gloucester Docks. You will find famous car brands from yesteryear including Aston Martin, Jensen, Bentley, Triumph, Morris and Alvis to name just a few. Incredible vehicles from the 1900s through the Roaring Twenties and the War Years to the gleaming chrome of the fifties, the iconic designs of the Swinging Sixties, sports cars from the eighties and an instant nostalgia hit from nineties classics.
Learn some moves and dance along to some great sounds; build the sandcastle of your dreams; our hilarious street performers or enjoy some fabulous food. There is lots to experience at Gloucester Goes Retro.
With a live music stage, the classic car show across the Gate Streets and Kings Square on Sea taking you back to the classic seaside holiday, there is something for everyone!
Cathedral Stone Carving Festival
23 - 25 August
Join the Cathedral stonemasons this August Bank Holiday for a celebration of craft and skill at Gloucester Cathedral's Stone Carving Festival and see heritage in action. The festival will explore the poignant theme of 'Peace and Remembrance,' marking 80 years since VE Day. Watch apprentices, master masons and talented newcomers alike bring stone to life before your eyes: chiselling, carving and shaping their creations over the course of the weekend.
Character Tours of The Folk of Gloucester
23 August
Explore the historic listed buildings with one of their costumed guides representing a real historical figure connected to 99-101 Westgate Street. Delve into the rich and diverse history of these unique buildings. Hear shocking tales of characters like Bishop Hooper, who burned at the stake in 1555. Learn about the people who lived here during the Siege of Gloucester in 1643, listen to the gossip from a servant maid, or meet an Edwardian undertaker.
Gloucester Goes Retro at The Folk
23 August
As part of the citywide celebration of vintage fashion. music and design, The Folk of Gloucester will be focusing on the 1920s-40s with a day of free music, dance and a display of vintage radios.
Print Your Own T-Shirt
23 August
In this special workshop at The Folk of Gloucester, you will learn the skills to create your own music-themed t-shirt using silk screen printing techniques. The workshop is led by The Folk of Gloucester staff and is suitable for age 6 and above.
Retro Bottomless Brunch at Coal Kitchen
23 August
Join Coal Kitchen to celebrate Gloucester Goes Retro with a retro themed bottomless brunch from 12pm - 4pm. They will have live music from 6pm to carry on the party!
Retro Rewind
23 August
Eastgate Indoor Market are joining Gloucester Goes Retro with a special event! Shop for unique retro and vintage finds, listen to classic retro tunes while you browse and take a 'Time Machine' back to the good old days while you wander around.
Special Kinda Madness
23 August
At Gloucester Guildhall, Special Kinda Madness will perform a truly authentic set form each band, combining the phenomenally energetic stage presence of The Specials with the wonderful iconic tunes of the Madness 'Nutty Boys.'
Roman Soldier Tour of the Eastgate Chamber
23 August
Join Auxiliary Roman Soldier Lucius at the Museum of Gloucester for a fascinating visit underground to the Eastgate Chamber to see how and why the original city walls were built and what happened to them through the centuries.
Open Day at Llanthony
24 August
Step inside the stunning medieval buildings, explore the grounds and uncover Llanthony's rich history. This month, Llanthony are joined by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and families can enjoy the Marvellous Medieval Trail - hunt down 8 hidden facts and claim a prize!
