Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 by Candlelight

About

This atmospheric concert, sung by the Cathedral Choir in the Nave of Gloucester Cathedral by candlelight, promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Held in support of the Cathedral's In Tune Music & Organ Campaign and conducted by Gloucester Cathedral's esteemed Director of Music, Adrian Partington, the evening promises a rich tapestry of sound, light, and sacred beauty. The Cathedral Choir will be performing Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 (Vespro della Beata Vergine) — a towering masterpiece of the early Baroque alongside world-class ensemble La Serenissima. La Serenissima are renowned for their vivid interpretations of 18th-century Venetian music and will bring this monumental work to life. Their commitment to sharing the richness of early music with new audiences makes them the perfect partners for this performance.

Monteverdi's Vespers is a set of sacred compositions, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and is revered for its thrilling choruses, deeply expressive solo ensembles, and bold, innovative harmonies and textures. With its blend of ancient liturgical styles and modern operatic styles, Monteverdi's Vespers offers a deeply spiritual and musically dazzling experience.

This concert not only celebrates one of the great sacred works of the Western tradition but also shines a light on the vibrant musical life of Gloucester Cathedral. Don't miss this unforgettable evening of candlelit splendour and musical excellence.
