May is here with two bank holidays and plenty of events and activities to keep us all entertained! Fingers crossed for a beautiful, warm and sunny month here in Gloucester! 

Here are some of this month's highlights! 


Civic Trust Tours: Eastgate Chamber

01, 15 & 25 May, Eastgate Chamber

The history of Gloucester from the 2nd century through to the 18th century is visible in the Eastgate Chamber. You will see the remains of the 2nd century Roman gate and the 4th century walls. Remains of the 11th century Norman gate are to be seen as well as the 13th century tower and the 16th century horsepool. Learn about the many uses of the medieval tower and the significance of the Eastgate during the Siege of Gloucester in 1643.


Hands-On History – Object Handling with the Table Set

02 May, Museum of Gloucester

Step into the past and experience history up close. Explore the museum’s Table Set replica for yourself and enjoy a friendly chat with their Visitor Experience Assistant, who's on hand to share stories and answer your questions. This relaxed, drop in session is free to join.


Orchard St Food & Craft Market

02 & 03 May, Gloucester Quays

Set against the stunning backdrop of Gloucester Quays, the market brings together an exciting mix of delicious, locally sourced food and drink, artisan arts and crafts, jewellery, homeware, plants, seasonal produce, and mouth-watering street food and drinks.


Colour Up For Kids

9 May, Plock Court

Get ready for a splash of colour, bubbles, music, and inflatables! Run, walk, or skip through this fun-filled family event while supporting local children facing childhood cancer, life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.


Polish Heritage Day

9 May, Gloucester Park

Head down to Gloucester Park for a vibrant celebration of Polish culture, community, and tradition at Polish Heritage Day! This family-friendly event brings together people of all backgrounds to experience the rich heritage of Poland right in the heart of the city.


Film Screening – Gentle, Angry Women

15 May, The Folk of Gloucester

Three young activists trace the legacy of Greenham Common Women's Peace protest forty years on and discover the alarming reality of British nuclear armament. This coming-of-age documentary, driven by intergenerational dialogue, speaks to the need for hope, action and change. This screening includes a Q & A session with a Greenham Common peace campaigner.


Eurovison Watch Party

16 May, Dr Foster

Get ready for a night of outrageous outfits, questionable key changes, and absolute bangers — Eurovision is heading to The Yard in full force. Dr Foster's are screening the biggest music event of the year on the big screen, turning the volume up, and packing the night with everything it deserves: energy, chaos, and a lot of singing along.


Gloucester Local History Month

16 – 30 May

Gloucester local history month is Gloucester’s contribution to the national local history month organised by the Historical Association. Through a range of activities and events, this is an opportunity to tell the story of some of Gloucester’s most renowned characters. There is also the chance to explore your own family history and discover stories yet to be told.


Llanthony Cheese & Cider Open Day

23 May, Llanthony Secunda Priory

Head down to Llanthony Secunda Priory for the Llanthony Cheese & Cider Open Day. A celebration of Gloucestershire's rich food heritage and rural traditions, set within the beautiful historic grounds of the Priory. This family-friendly event brings together local producers, traditional entertainment and hands-on activities for all ages. Throughout the day, enjoy Morris dancing performances, a Children's Trail, and take part in the Mini Cheese Rolling Event - a fun tribute to the county's famous custom.


Dr Foster Real Ale Festival

23 - 24 May, Dr Foster

Head down to Dr Foster at Gloucester Docks for their very first Real Ale Festival – a full weekend celebration of the very best in local beer, cider, and community. They will be pouring 25+ beers & ciders, all from outstanding regional breweries and cider makers. Expect everything from crisp session bitters and bold IPAs to traditional scrumpy and modern fruit ciders.
