Painted signs at the National Waterways Museum Gloucester

About

Written on the Waterways

21 July - 29 August 2026 | Tuesday–Saturday, 10am-4pm

Visit the National Waterways Museum Gloucester this summer to explore our "Written on the Waterways" school summer holiday activities.

From hand-painted boat panels to hard-wearing enamel signs, explore how lettering worked across the canal network through a series of self-guided activities inspired by the signs found throughout the museum.

Families can explore the contrast between styles: some canal signs were carefully painted by hand, full of colour and individuality, while others were made in enamel - with raised letters, designed for the elements.

These activities, which explore designs, textures, and words, are suitable for all ages and are included with your museum ticket. Both day and annual admission options are available.
