A smiling woman in a comical eel costume against the background of a watercolour painting of the River Severn

About

During the 1870s, Gloucester became the scene of a bitter conflict over an unusual resource - baby eels! This humorous play by Jessica Law and John Bassett covers this bizarre moment in Gloucestershire history and other times the lives of ordinary people have been upended by the European Eel.

From the dawn of the dinosaurs to the draining of the Fens and the career of Sigmund Freud, eels have impacted history and science in many unexpected (and hilarious) ways. And now that they're in decline, understanding this endangered species has never been more important. Join us on a sketch-based romp through the history and science of the European Eel, inspired by the TV series "Horrible Histories".
