A new volunteer initiative is set to bring an even warmer welcome to the city as Welcome to Gloucester Ambassadors launches this year, led by Gloucester BID and local stakeholders.

The programme will see a team of friendly, knowledgeable volunteers positioned across the city centre to greet visitors, support residents, and promote Gloucester’s vibrant attractions, businesses and events.

From the historic beauty of Gloucester Cathedral to the bustling waterfront at Gloucester Docks and the electric atmosphere of matchdays at Gloucester Rugby, Gloucester offers a rich blend of heritage, culture, sport and retail. The Welcome to Gloucester Ambassadors will play a vital role in showcasing these highlights and strengthening the city’s visitor economy.

A Friendly Face for the City
The main purpose of the initiative is simple: to provide a professional, friendly meet-and-greet service that creates a lasting impression of Gloucester as a welcoming and vibrant destination.
Ambassadors will:

  • Offer a warm welcome in key city centre locations
  • Provide directions and guide visitors to attractions and businesses
  • Distribute maps
  • Share up-to-date information on events, offers and activities

Ambassadors will be out in the city during major events and busy periods, including festivals, large sporting fixtures and seasonal markets.

Flexible Commitment, Meaningful Impact
Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of four hours per month, typically in two-hour shifts during event days, home games and peak visitor periods. Ambassadors will work in pairs or small teams across the city centre’s key entry points and attractions.
Full training and ongoing support will be provided by Gloucester BID and partners. Volunteers will receive a branded polo shirt, name badge and access to additional uniform items.

Who Can Apply?
The programme is open to enthusiastic individuals aged 18 and over who:

  • Are friendly, confident and enjoy meeting people
  • Are proud of Gloucester and keen to promote it
  • Are comfortable working outdoors
  • Can commit to occasional weekend and evening shifts
  • Have knowledge of the city (or a willingness to learn)

Benefits of Becoming an Ambassador
Volunteering as a Welcome to Gloucester Ambassador offers:

  • The opportunity to learn more about Gloucester and its economy
  • The chance to meet new people and join a supportive community team
  • Valuable experience to enhance employment prospects
  • A meaningful way to contribute to the city’s growth and success
  • Incentives from local businesses

By building on the everyday kindness already shown by Gloucester residents, this new initiative aims to elevate the city’s welcome to a coordinated, professional level, ensuring every visitor leaves with a positive and lasting impression.
