In What's On

This year there will be a nightmare before Christmas in Gloucester, as St Mary de Crypt is transported back to Victorian London!

Fear stalks these cobbled streets in the aftermath of one man’s ill-fated scientific folly. Grove Productions are set to reprise their critically acclaimed theatrical interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The timing could not be more appropriate for this striking gothic thriller to be brought to life on stage. The cold dark nights linger, the fog rolls in across the docks, and there is a truly spooky energy in the air.

St Mary de Crypt Church, on Southgate Street is instantly recognisable for its squat rectangular bell tower and gorgeous Norman architecture. With records dating the church site back to 1140 it is no wonder the location, with a litany of history behind it, has been selected for this spooky piece. It’s not the first time Grove Productions have graced the location, which is quickly developing a reputation as a performance venue that is as beautiful acoustically as it is architecturally, having performed a version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol there last year. A wholly appropriate piece given that St Mary de Crypt is the burial place of James ‘Jemmy’ Wood, the well known Miser of Gloucester, a key inspiration for the character of Ebeneezer Scrooge. A Christmas Carol received very positive reviews, and the same is to be said of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

The show wowed audiences in its initial run, the production was praised abundantly. It was described as “a work of genius” by one audience member, a sentiment echoed by another “a perfectly spooky adaptation, gorgeous staging, spot-on character portrayals, and just wonderful acting all round!”.

The dark figure of Mr Hyde stalks the streets of London, killing without remorse, while the devout Dr Jekyll goes about his daily life. Jekyll's obsession with the dual nature of man and the idea of good and evil has driven him to do the unthinkable. In the name of religion he turns to science in an attempt to cure the human soul, to draw out the bad and be left with only righteousness. As the bodies start to mount up, Dr Jekyll, afraid for his reputation, attempts to keep his relationship to Mr Hyde a secret. But this ungodly experiment cannot end well.

The gripping and suspenseful tale has been lovingly, and painstakingly, adapted from Stevenson’s original writing by University of Gloucestershire graduate Joy-Amy Wigman. She set out with the aim of creating the most authentic version of the script possible, maintaining Stevenson's artful use of language, mystery, and thrill, but doing so in a way that is imaginative and engaging as a performance. Sticking so close to the source material makes this piece not only a delight for literature enthusiasts, but makes it a must see for those studying the text at GCSE level.

The piece will not just be available for the public in evening shows, but a number of exclusive slots have been made available for schools, during the daytime, to help support their GCSE studies. As Moa Myerson, playing Utterson, explains “there's only so much you can get from a play or a book or a piece of theatre by reading it or watching it in 20-minute sections in a lesson once a week. It's so different being able to see it happening in the same room and feel that energy coming off of the people in front of you.” she added “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Grove is going to be something special!”

This brand-new stage adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic brings to life the story of Gabriel Utterson as he tries to unravel the mystery of his friend Dr Jekyll's new associate Mr Hyde. Why would Jekyll change his will to leave everything to a man who has Satan's signature written upon his face? Can Dr Jekyll keep control of Mr Hyde? And will Utterson discover the terrible truth behind their friendship?
