Hospitality company Loungers is set to breathe new life into the former Chambers Pub in a major boost to the transformation of Kings Square.
The south-west based company known for its popular brands Cosy Club, Lounge and Brightside, all recognised for their eye- catching interiors and retro styling, says it is excited about taking on the 5,000 sq ft space at the heart of the Kings Square.
Known locally for Portivo Lounge at Gloucester Quays and the Cosy Club in Cheltenham, the new Lounge, which will create between 30-40 jobs for local people, will cater for all tastes throughout the day with a varied and innovative all-day menu, with unique interiors emphasising warmth and comfort, often described as a ‘home from home’.
Originally formed by three friends from Bristol, Loungers has a real community focus and encourages staff at each site to engage with the local neighbourhood, welcoming locals, charities, and groups looking for a space for meetings, community events, and fundraisers.
Alex Kalebic, Head of Acquisitions, Loungers says: “We are delighted to be working with Gloucester City Council on this project. We are looking forward to bringing our well-loved family-friendly, all-day offer, and second site to the city centre, and to playing our part at the heart of this exciting regeneration scheme.”
Having recently announced their plans to invest in the site, Loungers will be applying for a new premises licence and full planning permission for the opening – to include external seating overlooking the newly regenerated Kings Square public space and University of Gloucester Campus - with the hope to open in Spring/Summer 2026.
The news comes soon after the growing office and events space operator Patch announced it will open its flagship site in the Forum development opposite, with another tenant soon to be announced.
It is hoped the new Lounge will become a key destination in the heart of the city – attracting both daytime and evening visitors and complementing the Forum’s boutique hotel, Hotel Indigo, which will also boast a restaurant and a roof top bar. It is also hoped that it could prove a boost for the businesses that sit above it in Kings House, which include Jolt, a hub for creative and cultural businesses, and The Music Works, which offers support to local musicians, both supported by the city council in collaboration with local partners.
Councillor Jeremy Hilton, Leader of Gloucester City Council, said: “This is great news for Gloucester and another huge step towards the transformation of the city. We know there’s been lots of interest in this site particularly as it’s so prominent in Kings Square. We’re delighted to announce we’ll be working with a dynamic brand like Loungers who share our ambition for Gloucester and are really excited to be part of what we’re creating here.”
