Gloucester Civic Trust is delighted to announce its line up for Heritage Open Days 2025, the city’s largest free festival of history and culture, taking place from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th September 2025.
This year’s national theme is Architecture, and Gloucester is set to shine with a vibrant programme of guided walks, talks, tours, live music, and special openings across the city. With over 2,000 years of history to explore – from its Roman origins to its thriving present – visitors will discover Gloucester in new and exciting ways.
Alongside the plethora of Guided Walks there are a few exclusive new offerings for 2025:
- Exclusive Guided Walks – from Roman Gloucester to the Siege of 1643, Beatrix Potter’s city connections, and NEW tours of Eastgate Street and The King’s Bastion, recently reopened after several years.
- Heritage Venues – step inside historic gems like The Fleece Hotel and Undercroft, Gloucester Cathedral’s Parliament Rooms and late-night opening, Llanthony Secunda Priory, the newly restored St Michael’s Tower, the University of Gloucestershire’s new City Campus at the former Debenhams building, and The Forum.
- Music & Performance – enjoy everything from medieval tunes and folk music to performances by Gloucester Dementia Choir, Nethra Academy of Performing Arts, and a site-specific concert in Eastgate Chamber.
- Special Talks – covering topics from Gloucester’s maritime and railway history to the story of the Tailor of Gloucester, the restoration of historic buildings, and the city’s connection to W.E. Henley’s poem Invictus.
- Places of Worship – many of the city’s historic churches and faith centres will be open, including St Mary de Crypt, St Nicholas’s Church, Mariners’ Chapel, and NEW additions such as St George’s Tuffley and St Catharine’s Church.
All events are free to attend, with no booking required for most activities. Some tours and talks have limited capacity and must be pre-booked via https://www.tickettailor.com/events/gloucestercivictrustlimited
The Gloucester Heritage Open Days Hub at St Mary de Crypt Church will provide refreshments, a friendly meeting point, and the chance to chat with Civic Trust volunteers. Visitors are also encouraged to stop by The Folk of Gloucester and the newly reopened St Michael’s Tower at The Cross.
Debbie Vass, Heritage Open Days Co-ordinator for Gloucester Civic Trust, said:
“Heritage Open Days is our chance to celebrate Gloucester’s incredible history and architecture with the community and visitors alike. Thanks to the support of guides, stewards, venue owners, and volunteers, we are once again able to offer an inspiring weekend of discovery – and it’s all free.”
