About
Join us for our History Huddle - St Oswald, The Place and the Person with Kayleigh Ackerman.
St Oswald's Priory is a barely known place within Gloucester, lacking recognition, but was once a place of such import that royalty were buried there. So who was this St Oswald and how did a Northumbrian King and Saint end up in Gloucester? In 909, some of his sainted body was retrieved from the Danelaw and brought to Gloucester by the Mercian royalty to support their founding of a royal centre here. However, while both Gloucester and St Oswald remained important, this particular priory was falling into disrepair already in the 1030's. We'll explore what we can learn from this, and what the priory's failure to last says about the venture's overall success.
