Elmore Chamber Music Festival

About

The Elmore Chamber Music Festival takes place in the historic 13th-century church of St. John the Baptist, Elmore, nestled near the scenic banks of the River Severn in the heart of Gloucestershire's picturesque countryside. Held annually over four days in early August, the Festival offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere where audiences can enjoy world-class chamber music performed by some of the most talented and critically acclaimed young musicians of their generation. Over the past five years, ECMF has steadily established itself as a prominent event among U.K. chamber music festivals, dedicated to bringing outstanding classical musicians to perform in the stunning setting of St. John the Baptist Church, in rural Gloucestershire.

The inaugural Festival, held in August 2020, faced the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, with government restrictions forcing the relocation of the event just two days before the first concert. With indoor performances banned, the Festival quickly adapted by moving to an outdoor venue. Thanks to the incredible support of local residents, ECMF went ahead as planned, marking the birth of the festival.

In 2021, ECMF returned to its intended home at St. John the Baptist Church, where it continues to grow, drawing musicians and audiences alike to experience exceptional performances in this beautiful historic venue. Since then, the Festival has expanded each year, welcoming an ever-growing roster of talented artists and ensembles. Previous performers have included Petr Prause, Ben Powell, Toby Hughes, the De Beauvoir Piano Trio, Rosa Hartley, the Elmore Quartet, Victor Lim, and Filip Michalak.

Since 2021, the Festival has expanded its mission by opening its stage to local young musicians. Over the past two years, ECMF has hosted three events specifically designed to nurture emerging talent. These include a pianist masterclass, a performer showcase, and a composition workshop for young composers. Each year, around 20 children from two local schools are involved, enriching the musical experiences of the next generation and connecting them with professional artists.

Alongside its outstanding musical performances, the Elmore Chamber Music Festival prides itself on offering top-tier hospitality before and after each concert. The Festival Bar, in partnership with Gloucester's award-winning Pelican Inn, provides a superb selection of drinks, including local ciders and freshly brewed cask ales from the renowned Wye Valley Brewery, located just across the River Severn.
